Religious War Divides Bikies?
The Sydney Morning Herald has added a nominal religious element to the recent bombing of the Hell's Angels club in Petersham. The paper is citing allegations that the Notorious gang (from Western Sydney) is comprised on predominantly Sunni Lebanese while the Comancheros (from South Sydney) are headed up by a Beirut born Shi'a leader.
The article goes on to call both groups 'Nike' bikies... i.e. bikies who drive hotted up cars, have interesting haircuts, new clothes and rarely ride motorbikes. At what point do you differentiate between a gang and a bikie gang - surely the presence of bikes is crucial here. Also, surely you could pick some kickarse Arabic name for your gang instead of referencing... Mexico...
Using religion to describe the ethnic makeup of a gang in Sydney is useless. I understand that gang lines can mirror similar socio-geographic lines to religion but I am confident in saying that control of Sydney's drug, prostitution and weapons trades has nothing to do with the spiritual.
UPDATE (17/02/09): the next day the bikies responded to this article
"In a letter from his lawyer, the president stated that "religion plays no part" in the conflict between his chapter and a new gang, Notorious. The statement came as police sources indicate there is an ongoing war between the two factions. The Comanchero said there were only four people of the Islamic faith in the club and religion had nothing to do with the conflict."
